Fed: Solid growth in arrivals for July

BRISBANE, Aug 21 AAP - Despite a dramatic drop in arrivals from New Zealand, the number
of arrivals in Australia in July grew by 4.2 per cent, according to the latest figures.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics said there were 447,000 arrivals in Australia last
month, up on the 429,000 who arrived in July last year.

While numbers from most source countries went up, the number of people arriving from
New Zealand plummeted 17.1 per cent to 79,400.

In July last year a record 93,400 New Zealanders arrived in Australia.

But this included more than 10,000 who crossed the Tasman for the Bledisloe Cup game in Sydney.

Among other major source countries, arrivals from Japan grew by two per cent in July,
the United Kingdom was up 15.8 per cent and the United States was up 6.9 per cent.
